Mission # 170 -- December 12, 1944, Tuesday AM
Schleiden, Germany -- Defended Village

Transcribed from USAF Archives

The planes took off again on the 12th, led by Capt. Morton, Lt. Moore, B-N, and Capt. Peck, Lt. Madenfort, B-N, to attack the defended village of Schleiden. Equipment in the PPF plane failed while going to the I.P. The PPF plane did not notify the box leaders of the equipment failure so that they did not attempt visual bombing. Instead the PPF plane circled the I.P. and led the formation back to the Base.

Mission #170 - 12 December - Schleiden, Germany. Uncertain weather delayed take off until noon with our planes following the B-26 Pathfinders. Trouble again took over with the PFF equipment, preventing the group from dropping their bombs. Flights were led by Lts. Mish and Shaft, BN, Lts. Brown and Kerns, BN, and Lts. Buskirk and Hanna, BN. Lts. Anderson with Babbage, BN, leading a flight, had to return to base after flying for about 45 minutes, since their nose wheel did not retract. When he got over the field, he snapped the plane nose up and down a few times to ensure it would not collapse, locking it in place. The touch-down was made with no further problems. No battle damage was incurred for the formation and all returned to base safely.

The Ninth Bombardment Division Inspector General paid a visit to our group on 13 December. A complete administrative inspection took place, resulting in a superior rating being posted.

"670th Bombardment Squadron (L) History"
Transcription from USAF Archives

December 12th was a happy day for the following combat crew personnel, who had completed their tour of sixty-five combat missions and left for the United States and home: Captain Rudisill, Lieutenants Joost and McGlohn, and Staff Sergeants McKee, Wilson, Falk, Maziasz, Colbert, Paules, Eutsler, Francis P. Glynn, Patrick F. Glynn, Palmer, and Martinez.

Pathfinder equipment failure prevented completion of a mission again on 12 December, which was to be an attack on the defended village of Schleiden. Since the pathfinder plane failed to notify the box leader of equipment failure, no visual bombing was attempted. Instead, the PFF plane circled the Initial Point and led the formation back to the base.

December 12th, 1944

The 416th had as its target on the morning of December 12 the defended village of Schleiden, but the PFF method failed and the formation did not drop. All planes returned.
