Mission # 122 -- August 10, 1944, Thursday PM
La Lande-de-Louge, France -- Ammunition Dump

"416th Bombardment Group (L) - Group History 1944"
Transcribed from USAF Archives

For the third day running, our planes took advantage of the good weather and flew two missions. This was on the 10th. In the morning, Major Price and Capt. McNulty led the two boxes in an attack on the Foret du Romare ammunition dump. The weather over the target was bad, however, so that no bombs were dropped. That afternoon bad weather again caused our planes to bring their [bombs back from] an attack on the Lu Londe de Louge ammunition dump. Capt. [Huff, Lt. Kupits,] B-N, and Capt. Morton, Lt. Moore, B-N, led the two boxes. [Shortly after he had] taken off, the left engine of Lt. J.P. Kenny's plane [failed and Lt. Kenny] crash landed the plane which was washed out. Although [Lt. Kenny suffered no] injuries, his two gunners, Sergeants J.K. Spadoni and F. [Noteriani were] seriously injured and were confined to the hospital.

Mission #122 - 10 August - PM - Le Lande de Louge - Ammo Dump. Captain Huff and Lt. Kupits, BN led Box I. Captain Morton Lt. Moore, BN led Box II. Lts. Wheeler and Arrington, BN, Lts. Marzolf and Beck, BN, Lts. Meagher and Burg, BN led flights. - On take-off Lt. Kenny of the 668th with gunners Sgts. Spadoni and Natoriani experienced engine failure, causing the plane to crash not far from the end of the runway. Lt. Kenny walked away uninjured. Sgt. Notariani was injured rather seriously, requiring hospitalization and eventually returned to the states for serious wounds received in action, for recuperation. Sgt. Spadoni suffered a broken jaw and other minor injuries.

The evening of 10 August, the group were treated to what was explained as being a spectacular sight, at least it was impressive. Looking up, just prior to midnight, there must have been 1000 or more RAF four engine bombers, with night lights on, making the sky appear to be a moving carpet, heading for the southern coast of England for their usual carpet bombing of German cities. It must have taken l5 minutes for them all to pass over. In addition to the plane lights, massive search sky lights were scanning the sky for foreign planes that may have invaded the area. In all, the Brits put on a great show, not to lessen the engine noises drowning out conversation.

In the morning of the 10th, Capt Huff led the first box of a formation attacking the Foret du Roumare ammunition dump. The weather over the target was bad, however, so that no bombs were dropped. That afternoon bad weather caused our planes to bring their bombs back from an attack on the La Londe de Louge ammunition dump. Capt. Huff and Capt Morton led the two boxes.

Transcription from USAF Archives

On August 10th Major Meng left the squadron to become Deputy Group Commander. His departure was keenly felt by all, but we were pleased to see him given due recognition that the advancement carried with it. Major Lloyd F. Dunn came from the 671st Squadron to take command.

Two missions were flown on this date against ammunition dumps at the Foret de Roumare and La Londe de Louge, but no bombs were dropped due to a heavy overcast. Fifteen of our crews were on these two missions.

August 10th, 1944

Running their fifth and sixth missions in three days, the 416th went out twice on August 10th with fragmentation bombs in the bomb bays, but thick cloud formations over the target on both runs made it necessary for the planes to bring their loads back. The target was an ammunition dump at Foret De Roumare in the morning; and in the afternoon it was an ammunition dump at La Londe De Louge.
