Just six days before the city fell into our hands, we attacked the defended position on the Point Lanveoc on the south edge of the harbor of Brest on the 14th. Bad weather hung over the target areas so that no bombs were dropped. On the return trip, one flight got too close to the Guernsey Island, and the guns which had been silent for so long opened up on our planes. Three ships suffered minor flak damage.

Mission #144 - 14 September - Brest. Captain Osborne and Lt. Forma, BN leading Box I with Captain McNulty and Lt. Burseil, BN on Box II. Captain Cole and Lt. Basnett, BN led a flight. Thirty six aircraft made the "milk-run" to Brest, with no flak or fighters bothering the group. Reaching the target area, cloud cover prevented dropping bombs, so they returned to base. Crossing the channel toward England, planes were running low on petrol, having to get down below the overcast. Captain Cole got down to 300 feet altitude, Six planes had to set down on landing strips in Cherbourg to gas up. Lt. Gary landed on an air strip in the Cherbourg area. All got back to base safely. Lt. Downing lost oil pressure and had to land in Normandy, without problems.

Though we were preparing to leave for a new base, operational missions were to continue. One half of the Squadron was to remain behind to continue operations while our new base was being prepared by the advanced echelon. On September 14th, twelve crews took off as part of another attack against Brest defended position.

September 14th, 1944
Although on its last legs, Brest still stands and the 416th made another long haul to the battered port on the afternoon of September 14th . Flying through heavy clouds and an overcast the Havocs found the target covered, and after making two runs had to head back to England without dropping their bombs. When the formation approached the English coast all ships were very low on gas. Captain Cole, leading the 671st flight, brought his echelon down below the overcast, which was just 300 feet. Lt. Gary set his ship down on a landing strip in Cherbourg, while the other six ships landed on the southern coast of England. All ships and crews returned to Wethersfield in tact.
