Aircraft Serial Number (Type): 43-22301 (Douglas A-26B-10-DT Invader) 9th AF; 416th Bomb Gp; 669th Bomb Sq Mission # 181; Box: I; Flight: 2; Position: 3; A/C Fuselage Code: 2A-O Reason: Crashed On Take Off Weather (CRTW) Damage: Completely destroyed (4) Point Of Departure: A-55 Melun/Villaroche, France Location: 300 yards north of Station A-55
Notes: Crashed on take-off and immediately exploded, killing both crew members. Crash was due to frost/ice formation on propeller and wings. The laminar flow airfoil section is extremely sensitive to deformation such as frost formation, thus reducing normal lift. Frost on the propeller also reduced efficiency. Description: On the take-off, two A-26s crashed. Both crashed after the planes had gotten into the air. The bombs from the first plane exploded immediately and the plane burned. Both the pilot, Lt H.B. Clark, and his gunner, Staff Sergeant J.W. Sabadosh, were killed. ... The reasons for the crashes are unknown, although icing of the wings or carburetor might have caused them. (416th BG History 1945) See Mission # 181 for additional details |
