Aircraft Serial Number (Type): 41-39218 (Douglas A-26B-20-DL Invader)

9th AF; 416th Bomb Gp; 668th Bomb Sq

Mission # 181; Box: II; Flight: 2; Position: 3; A/C Fuselage Code: 5H-C

Reason: Crashed On Take Off (CRT)

Damage: Completely destroyed (4)

Point Of Departure: A-55 Melun/Villaroche, France

Location: 200 yards north of Station A-55

Personnel
Duty Name Rank S/N Status
Pilot Roberts, William H. 2Lt O-759509 Slightly Injured
Airplane Mechanic - Gunner Windisch, Raymond P. Sgt 33562557 Not injured

Notes:
Crashed on take-off, slid off runway, hit a ditch. Aircraft caught fire and crew abandoned the A/C which subsequently exploded. Crash was due to frost/ice formation on propeller and wings. The laminar flow airfoil section is extremely sensitive to deformation such as frost formation, thus reducing normal lift. Frost on the propeller also reduced efficiency.

Description:
A third plane refused to get more than a few feet off the ground and settled down at the end of the runway where the landing gear collapsed. Its crew, Lt Wm. H. Roberts, and Sergeant Raymond P. Windisch, were uninjured. The reasons for the crashes are unknown, although icing of the wings or carburetor might have caused them.
