Group and Unit Histories

Mission # 70 -- June 7, 1944, Wednesday PM
Balleroy and Le Molay-Littry, France -- Road Junction and Division Headquarters

"416th Bombardment Group (L) - Group History 1944"
Transcribed from USAF Archives

In the afternoon, splitting up into two boxes, two targets were attacked. The first box led by Major Price dropped an excellent concentration of bombs from an altitude of 2,500 feet on a road junction at Belleroy. Numerous hits were scored on the main highway and other roads causing severe damage, probably blocking the choke point. Lt. Osborne with Lt. Forma, B-N, were given the Divisional Headquarters at Littry for a target. There were no pictures or checkpoints for Lt. Forma to use, only the grid coordinates on a map. Bringing the formation on to the target at 2,000 feet, he dropped a heavy concentration into the northern part of the target area. It was an unique, but well-done job.

Mission #70 - 7 June - PM - Balleroy Road Junction. Major Price and Lt. Hand, BN led Box I with Lts. Osborne and Forma, BN leading Box II. Each box was assigned a different target, with the second box going for a Nazi Field Headquarters at Littry, France. Both boxes scored well, destroying their targets. Again, no flak or fighters bothered the group. All returned safely.

"670th Bombardment Squadron (L) History"
Transcription from USAF Archives

On two different missions on June 7th, the 670th had 18 crews. Seven crews were part of a mission that had a double target, in the morning, attacking a highway bridge at Pont de La Roque; and a road junction at Billeroy. In the late afternoon 11 crews took part in a mission against a highway junction at Tilly Sur Seulles, where at that time, a large battle was raging. Poor weather prevented our planes from giving much aid to the tide of battle.

"671st Bomb Squadron (L) Unit History"
Gordon Russell and Jim Kerns

After a good nights rest (?) the Group drove out again over the invasion coast and penetrated the enemy defenses to hit at bridges, crossroads and an infantry division Headquarters. No enemy fire was met in the days operations, a complete reversal of the day before. These targets were hit on two missions; one in the early morning, and the other in the afternoon. Results were believed to have been good. All planes returned safely.
