The final mission of the month, mission No. 133, was flown on the 28th. The target was the Doulens fuel dump. Capt. Huff and Capt. Morton led the two boxes which dropped a total of 208 x 500 pounds of bombs. The results ranged from good to excellent. Photo reconnaissance showed a concentration of craters across the target severely damaging the installations. All the railroad lines were cut in several places at the junction point just south of the target.
To complete the story of our operations, let me add that on the 23 missions flown by the Group, we flew 847 individual sorties and dropped 735 1/2 tons of bombs. The Month-End Summary ties up our operations into the larger picture of the War of Western Europe.

BN, leading Box II. Captain McNulty and Lt. Burseil, BN, - Captain
Marzolf and Lt. Beck, BN and Lts. DeMand and Burns,
BN led flights. Bombing was scored as three excellents, two
goods, and one fair. No enemy fighters or flak bothered the formation.
30 August - On a training mission, Lt. John D. Smith,
assigned to the 669th squadron was on a training mission with
Lt. E. L. Miller. Lt. Smith was on Miller's right wing and in trying
to cross under Lt. Miller's plane, hit, cutting off the tail of
Miller's plane, at the turret. Miller jettisoned his hatch giving his
gunner the bail out signal, both jumped with opened parachutes.
Lt. Smith had joined the outfit only eight days earlier, and now
is being buried at Cambridge Military Cemetery.

Two more missions were flown on August 27th and 28th to round out the flying activities for the month. These attacks, in which 18 crews were from the 670th, were against the Rouen ferrying area and the Doullens fuel dumps.

The 416th once again proved its effectiveness against fuel dump targets when it blitzed the key fuel supplies at Doullens, about 60 miles North of Paris and just a few miles from Abbeyville, on the evening of August 28th . Flak was sparse and battle damage nil.
It was Lt. Cole and Lt. Basnett who kept up the reputation of the 671st, with an excellent. The trailing pattern centered 250 feet East of the DMPI. Strikes were made across the target, blanketing the eastern part of the T/A, with probable hits on installations. Several hits were made on the tracks also. Captain Marzolf and Lt. Beck were given a fair on bombing done by their flight, but there was a question as to whether they were given the right pattern on the photos. It is believed that the pair should have been credited with a good. An over-all bombing record for the formation showed three excellents, two goods and a fair.
Crews reported French roads were choked with enemy vehicles abandoned for lack of petrol (Gas, to you Americans).
