Group and Unit Histories

Mission # 126 -- August 13, 1944, Sunday AM
Pontleveque - Dozule, France -- Road Junctions

"416th Bombardment Group (L) - Group History 1944"
Transcribed from USAF Archives

Flying their tenth mission in 6 days, our crews took off on the 13th to bomb choke points in the Lisieux area and cut off the German escape routes from the Falaise gap. The targets were difficult to pick up through the smoke and haze so that the Bombardier-Navigators, in all but one case were forced to pick out different MPI's in the target area. Their results ranged from good to excellent.

Mission #126 - 13 August - Pont D'Eveque in the Lisieux area. These again, were choke points to close up for the German troops trying to make their way back to the Fatherland. Major Willetts and Lt. Royalty, BN led Box I with Captain Hulse and Lt. Conte, BN leading Box II. Lts. Osborne and Forma BN, and Lt. Demun and Lt. McQuade, BN led flights. Bombing was effective, cutting off the road escapes. Excellent bombing was reported along with good and fair scores. While flak was reported as being light, it was quite accurate, hitting six planes, but no losses were reported.

On August 14, Brigadier General Anderson sent commendations to S/Sgts. Blackford and Burger for their ingenious repairs to the altimeter and air speed lines of Lt. Hall's plane on the mission to Glos Sur Risle on 18 July, enabling the plane to fly right.

Flying their 10th mission in six days, our crews took off on the 13th to bomb choke points in the Lisieux area to cut off German escape routes from the Falaise Gap. Capt. Hulse led the second box and Lt. DeMun, Lt. McQuade, B-N, led one of its flights. Their results were good.

Transcription from USAF Archives

Twelve of our crews participated in an attack on August 13th to destroy the Pont L'Eveque-Dozale Highway. This crossroad junction was in the Lisieux battle area, and excellent results were obtained in rendering it useless to retreating German troops.

"671st Bomb Squadron (L) Unit History"
Gordon Russell and Jim Kerns

August 13, 1944

The 416th kept up their practice of hitting road choke points in the effort to cut off the German retreat in the Caen-Alencon sector. Taking off at 0900 the ships crossed the French countryside for the 126th time. The whole bomber command had the roads in the Liseaux area, and by the time dusk fell, almost every road and junction was cut to ribbons in this section. One flight received an excellent rating, two fair, and three other flights hit roads, but not the MPI. Six aircraft received flak damage, but all crews returned in tact.
