Escape & Evasion Report EE-1482 (Original NARA Report) MIS-X Report Number: EE-1482 Interviewed by I.S.9 (WEA): 5 Sep 44 Date missing in action: 6 June [1944] Date arrived in UK: 1-Feb-44 [NOTE, This is the date Palin came to the UK from the USA, not the date he was returned after evading capture] Narrative (Appendix "C") 1st Lt. WM. H. PALIN - "C"I was bombardier of an A-20 shot down near ROCQUEMONT, 27 KM NE of ROUEN, on 6 June 44. I was taken by Maquis to the farm of M. MAURICE LEROY, at BEAUMONT. I stayed here until Canadian troops arrived in this vicinity. M. et MME PIERRE WALLET, of ROCQUEMONT, were particularly helpful. They had also helped a great many other Allied fliers during the past four years. I was evacuated by Canadians on about 1 September. Narrative 2 PALINBombardier A-20 hit by flak. Came down near Rocquemont, 27 km NE of Rouen. Was taken to Maquis farm at Beaumont, where he was kept until Brit troops arrived in vicinity. Was in house of M. Maurice Leroy. Was particularly aided by M et Mme Pierre Wallet, who lived at Rocquemont and had helped a great many Allied fliers during the past four years. Their house was also Hq of the Maquis. MACR 6045 Details Notes: A/C Seen to Crash. Lost as a result of Enemy Anti-Aircraft and Other Circumstances. Crash landed just after target. Description: Two box leader's planes, Maj. Meng's and Maj. Campbell's, were hit even before they reached the target. ... Maj. Campbell was unable to make it. As the crews reported it, he kept his plane under control and appeared to make a normal landing in an open field in France. With him were Lt. William H. Palin, S/Sgt. Harold R. Hatch, and S/Sgt.
