Extracts from Newkirk, Arlington W (S/SGT.) Escape & Evasion Report EE-1262 (Original NARA Report) MIS-X Report Number: EE-1262 / IS9 Report Number: I.S.9(WEA)/8/204/2612 Interviewed by I.S.9 (WEA): 28 August 1944 Date Missing in Action: June 3-44 Returned to UK: 8/31/44 Narrative
I.S.9(WEA)/8/204
Though I landed near a German convoy (2130 hrs 3 June 44), I managed to get away without being seen by the convoy since I actually landed in a wheat field. Crawling to the end of the field, I stopped to fix my hand, which had been in- jured in the plane, with the first aid kit from the chute strap. As I was bury- ing my chute and mae west, three French saw me. One of them yelled, "American", at the same time making motions that they couldn't help me, but at the same time pointing south. So I started South. It was then 0100 hrs by the village clock. By morning I was in a woods N. of Rambouillet near a lone cabin next to a lumber mill. I knocked on the door. It was opened by a man who immediately yelled, "American" seeing my .45. He gave me civilian clothes and then took me to Rombouillet, where he put me in the hands of a helper who took me to Les Essarts. Here I was told that on 5 June I would go to Spain with 20 other Americans. That afternoon the railroad was bombed with the obvious result that the Spain trip was called off. Later that day I was taken to St. Hubert where I met Sgt. Herd (see I.S.9(WEA)/8/200) going to Paris with him., and remaining with the same group as he until about 14 August when I joined the FFI as a soldier. I was with the FFI until I went to the Hotel Windsor. Appendix "C" to E. & E. Report No. I.S.9(WEA)/8/204/2612 Date of Interview: 28 August 1944In Rambouillet I was taken to the Red Cross and put in charge of a doctor who took me to Les Essarts. In Les Essarts I was helped by M. Got. I was taken to M. Coxx and M. Charles Godard in ST. Hubert., when the Germans took M. Goddard prisoner, I was hidden by M. Got. I went to Paris with Mme. Lillie de Costa's group.
