William Kinney

Retired Air Force Colonel William Leroy Kinney, 94, of Braselton, Georgia, died Sunday, July 16, 2006.

Born in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Herschel and Margie Cruce Kinney. He was a member of the Zion Baptist Church in Braselton, where he served his church in many capacities, such as a deacon, member of the building committee and currently was deacon emeritus and finance committee chairman. He was a charter member of the West Jackson Lions Club, long-time officer of the Mulberry Association, served as past director of the Jackson County Farm Bureau, Assistant General Manager of the Stone Mountain Park, member of the Rockwell Masonic Lodge, member of the American Legion, VFW and the 416th Bomb Group.

Colonel Kinney retired from the Air Force in 1964, and became active in his church and community. He served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Bronze Star and two Air Force Commendation Medals.

Colonel Kinney was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth E. Kinney.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Ballew Odom Kinney, Braselton; step-daughter, Arnette Zaleski, Spring, Texas; step-son, Crawford Odom, Pensacola, Fla.; aunt, Lois Cruce, Hoschton; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 19, at the New Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Phillips and Don Leaptrott officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Kinney, Allen Bower, Jeff Ingram, Randall Duck, Gary Duck, and Billy Duck. Members of the Rockwell Masonic Lode, West Jackson Lions Club, Deacons of Zion Baptist Church and the Paper Sunday School Class served as Honorary Pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, 2001 Cherry Drive, Braselton, Georgia 30517.

Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, was in charge of arrangements.
