Description: Coe had died of injuries received in a jeep accident in the meantime, and the award was made posthumously to his father, Mr. Thomas E. Coe. (416th BG History 1944) On 17 July, Staff Sergeant William H. Coe, an airplane mechanic-gunner, died of injuries received 8 July 1944 in an automobile accident at Braintree, Essex. One of the Squadron's original combat gunners, Coe had flown forty-seven missions. On 14 August he was awarded posthumously the Soldier's Medal for heroism.
