Description: There was mild flak to contend with which gave a new gunner S/Sgt Francis L. Flacks, something to remind him what may be in store for him and the group in the future. He got hit with a shot of flak, causing serious enough injuries to require hospitalization. Some mild humor came of this when "Flacks caught flak" evolved. You can imagine who didn't think it was so funny, lying in bed, all bandaged up. (Conte, Page 82) General Orders No. 94, 4 June 1944, Purple Heart is awarded to: 668th Bombardment Squadron (L), Francis L. Flacks, 16041788, Staff Sergeant, Air Corps, United States Army. For wounds received in action against an enemy of the United States on 28 May 1944, while serving as Gunner on an A-20 airplane on a combat operational mission over enemy occupied territory. Entered military service at Detroit, Michigan. (416th BG Purple Heart Awards (PDF)) See Mission # 61 for additional details |
