Case History Of A-26 Airplane

In October, 1945 the Historical Division, Intelligence, T-2, Air Technical Service Command at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio produced the "Case History Of A-26 Airplane" study. This Case History summarized the initial planning and development of the Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc. A-26 Invader aircraft, through evaluations and subsequent deployment during WWII. 124 Original Supporting Documents were also provided.

The "Case History of A-26 Airplane" is available from the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) on Microfilm as PDF REEL: 3830, IRISREF: A2062, IRISNUM: 00142056, indexed at Air Force History Index.org. Many microfilm pages were very difficult to impossible to read. Our sincere thanks go to Ms. Tammy Horton at the AFHRA for graciously re-scanning the original paper pages which have been extracted from the PDF file she provided, digitally enhanced in an attempt to improve legibility, recombined into multiple PDF files by subject included below.

The "Case History Of A-26 Airplane" includes the following (click the link to view the corresponding PDF):
Introduction, 4 page Summary of the A-26 Airplane, and 29 page Supporting Documents Summaries
Photographs of XA-26A (DE) Prototype S/N 41-19505 (3); XA-26B (DE) Prototype S/N 41-19588 (1); and A-26B-1-DL S/N 41-39100 (2)
A-26B Light Bomber Performance Characteristics (February 7, 1946)
124 Original Supporting Documents (VERY large, 287 page PDF file - see also individual document list below)
All 345 "Case History of the A-26 Airplane" pages, graciously rescanned from the original paper copy by Ms. Tammy Horton of the AFHRA are also available in a single PDF file, but please be aware this file is VERY large.

For additional information on Prototype XA-26 aircraft, see the "Experimental Models" section of the Invader Historical Foundation Invader Models page.

While not part of the official "Case History", the following three documents describe early testing of
"Measurement Of Flying Qualities Of A Douglas A-26B Airplane (AAF No. 41-39120)":

- II : Lateral And Directional Stability And Control Characteristics, January, 1945, Memorandum Report L5A04. (archive.org URL)
- III : Stalling Characteristics, January, 1945, Memorandum Report L5A04a. (archive.org URL)

Original Supporting Documents

Listed below are the 124 individual Original Supporting Documents included in the
"Case History Of A-26 Airplane", one PDF file per document. Click a Document Number link to view that PDF.

Because some pages are very difficult to read, included as the first page of each
PDF file is the corresponding extract from the Supporting Documents Summaries pages.
The page counts shown below each Document Number indicates the original page count, not including the Summary.
